Houston Falls 3-1 at USF

TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of Houston Volleyball team fell 3-1 (13-25, 21-25, 25-23, 12-25) at USF on Sunday afternoon inside The Corral.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-12 overall and 0-6 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bulls improved to 12-6 overall and 3-3 in league action.
Junior setter Keandra McCardell posted 35 assists to pass LaShelle Dobson (2,540; 1985-88) for seventh place all-time in the Houston record books. The native of Missouri City, Texas, sits at 2,544 assists for her career.
Freshman outside hitter Faith Squier led the all with a career-high 14 kills. Junior outside hitter Brianna Lynch finished with 12 kills. Freshman libero Katie Karbo recorded a team-high 20 digs.
USF's setter Alex Mendoza posted 35 assists and 19 digs in a double-double performance. Bulls T'ara Austin and Clara Payne posted 12 and 11 kills, respectfully. Libero Amy Van Sant finished with a game-high 24 digs.
USF outhit the Cougars .275-.159, holding a 12-1 lead in blocks and 73-70 edge in digs. Houston led the Bulls 49-46 in kills.
USF took the first two sets 25-13 and 25-21 to hold a 2-0 lead over the Cougars at intermission.
Late in the third set, it seemed like the Bulls would close the match in straight sets, up 23-17. However, back-to-back kills from freshman outside hitter Megan Duncan opened an 8-0 run for Houston as the team took the set 25-23 to keep in match alive.
In the fourth set, USF jumped out 13-6 and cruised to the 25-12 final to take the 3-1 decision.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will continue conference play with three matches inside Athletics/Alumni Center. Houston will play host to Cincinnati (Oct. 13), East Carolina (Oct. 15) and Tulane (Oct. 19) across the homestand.
