Houston Drops 3-0 Decision to Cincinnati

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-16) to league-leader Cincinnati on Thursday night inside Athletics/Alumni Center.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-13 overall and 0-7 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bearcats improved to 11-7 overall and 6-1 in league action.
Outside hitters Brianna Lynch and Faith Squier, and middle blocker Hunter Wise co-led Houston with eight kills each. The match marked the first career start for Squier.
Setters Katie Krebs and Keandra McCardell posted 16 and 15 assists, respectfully. Freshman libero Katie Karbo led the Cougars with 10 digs, while junior outside hitter Sarah Afflerbaugh finished with eight digs and seven kills.
Cincinnati's Jordan Thompson led all with 18 kills. Ciara Hill and Carly Nolan recorded 12 and 11 kills, respectfully. Setter Jade Tinglehoff finished with 36 assists. Libero Abby Williams dug up 14 balls on the back row.
The Bearcats outhit Houston .471-.222, holding a 45-33 advantage in kills, 38-29 mark in digs and 5-3 edge in blocks.
Cincinnati never trailed in taking the opening set 25-13.
In the second set, both teams traded points in the early going. Tied 3-3, the Cougars took their first lead of the match behind a 4-1 run. However, the Bearcats responded with a three quick points out of a timeout to tie the match, 7-7. The two teams traded the next few rallies to push the score to 11-all before Cincinnati used a 5-2 surge to take a four-point lead at 17-13. The lead never fell below three points the rest of the way as the Bearkats took a 25-21 win and 2-0 lead into the break.
Cincinnati hit a match-high .483 clip in the third set to cruise to the 25-16 final and close the match in straight sets.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will play their second of a three-match homestand welcoming East Carolina to Athletics/Alumni Center in a noon first serve on Saturday.
