DALLAS -- Thanks to three sub-par individual rounds Tuesday, the University of Houston Men's Golf program finished as runner-up at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate with a score of 1,066 at Royal Oaks Country Club.
Freshman Pryce Beshoory posted the Cougars' low round of the day with a 2-under 69 on the 7,068-yard course, while fellow freshman George Gardner and junior Michael Perras each added 70s as the Cougars recorded a team total of 352 to finish with a 54-hole score of 1,066.
Starting on No. 1, Beshoory began his day with nine pars and a birdie through his first 10 holes. Although he endured back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 11-12, the Pearland, Texas, native moved back under par with consecutive birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 and sank his third and final birdie of the day on the 403-yard, par-4 17th hole to tie for 21st at 215.
Perras stood at even par through his first 14 holes but enjoyed birdies on two of his final four holes to cap his tournament and join Beshoory in a tie for 21st at 215.
Gardner drained 11 birdies with only a bogey on No. 9 through his first 12 holes and then went on a tear, sinking three consecutive birdies to finish in a tie for 36th at 218.
Sophomore Logan Davis recorded his third straight round of par or better to finish in a tie for ninth at 3-under 210. The Atascocita, Texas, native birdied two of his first eight holes but stood at +1 after back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 15-16.
Fortunately, Davis closed out his tournament with birdie on the final hole to lead the Cougars and post a top-10 finish.
Unlike most collegiate tournaments, the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate format calls for a 6-man lineup with the lowest five scores counting toward the team total.
Junior Papito Gonzalez joined Perras and Beshoory in a tie for 21st at 215, while redshirt freshman Zach Tracy tied for 28th at 217. Playing as an individual, junior Joshua Gibbons tied for 62nd at 225.
Host Baylor won the team championship with a score of 1,034. Following the Cougars, No. 40 Michigan (1,069), No. 20 Kent State (1,071 and Iowa (1,074) rounded out the top-five leaders.
