HOUSTON -- The Houston Cougar women's soccer program dropped its first game in the state of Utah losing 4-1 to the University of Utah on Friday in Salt Lake City.
"This weekend is good for us and something we need," head coach Chris Pfau said. "This is a great Utah team and another tough game Sunday. To play against a Pac-12 school and see how physical the game is shows where we need to improve."
Houston's senior goalkeeper Jordan Brown picked up a save in the third minute of the game to move her into seventh all-time on the Cougar's program list passing Lauren Frazier (88). Brown finished with nine saves and now has 97 in her career at Houston.
Utah found the net early in the 15th minute when the Utes' Max Flom tapped in a ball that was headed in loose in front of the net. The Cougars would yield two more goals before the end of the half and would head to the locker room down 3-0.
Houston responded in the second half, when sophomore Selena Peters struck a ball from 30 yards out into the back of the net for the Cougars' first goal of the season. Senior Hailey Kirkwood picked up the assist on Peters' second goal of her career.
The Utes would add a goal late in the match to bring the final score to 4-1.
"In the first half we did not compete individually and got exposed," Pfau said. "In the second half we stayed in our shape and competed, and I saw some nice things. From that we scored a great goal. As we grow we have to realize no matter how good we are we will still have to learn how to fight for every ball and every possession. From this game players showed me who wants to play and that is something I want from this weekend."
The Cougars will travel to Logan, Utah on Sunday, Sept. 30 to take on the Utah State Aggies at 1 p.m.
ABOUT THE AGGIES
The Cougars head to Logan, Utah for the first time in program history, after the two squads met up for the first time in Houston during the 2014 season, a 1-1 (2 OT) draw on Sept. 14.
Utah State enters the weekend with a 2-0-0 overall record and will head south down I-15 to Orem, Utah to meet Utah Valley on Friday, Aug. 28 at 8:30 p.m. CT before meeting the Cougars on Sunday. The Aggies won a pair of matches at home, knocking off Central Arkansas 1-0 in their season opener before defeating Missouri State 3-0 two days later.
Junior Jessica Brooksby and freshman Jordyn Chung-Hoon lead the Aggies on the offensive side in 2015 with each picking up a goal and assist through two games. Brooksby scored the game-winner against the Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas in the 17th minute, while Chung-Hoon scored the game-winning goal against the Missouri State Bears in the 72nd minute. Each of Brooksby and Chung-Hoon's goals were assisted by each other.
