HOUSTON -- The Houston Cougar women's soccer program wrapped up the season's first road trip by dropping a 2-0 decision to the Utah State Aggies on Sunday, Aug. 30 in Logan, Utah.
"This is the first time in a long time I've been frustrated with the team," Head Coach Chris Pfau said. "We played an incredible first half: the best I have seen us play, and we just had one moment where we turned off and gave up a horrible goal."
Utah State found the scoreboard early when an unlikely ball bounced off the crossbar and found forward Jayne Robinson for the score. Houston's defense was able to step up the rest of the way, and allowed just four shots over the remainder of the first half.
Houston came out strong in the second half, collecting a pair of shots by sophomore Margo McEntire, but neither were able to find the net. In the 62nd minute, sophomore Selena Peters showed some nifty moves dribbling through defenders, and finding Hailey Kirkwood who was just denied by the keeper on a shot toward the bottom left corner of the net.
Just moments later, senior goalkeeper Jordan Brown was tested by a Jordyn Chung-Hoon shot which the keeper turned away easily. That save gave Brown 100 for her career making her the seventh Cougar in program history to collect more than 100 saves. Brown would finish the match with three saves.
The Aggies would tack on another goal in the 67th minute when Jessica Brooksy connected on her second goal of the season to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead, which proved to be the final score.
"There were a lot of good things from this tough weekend, and we are starting to see a little light from the darkness, and that is exciting," Pfau said. "This is the first time since I have been here that we created and had players wanting to be on ball. We will make young mistakes, and at the end of the day we are young in regards of learning our new system and learning how to play. In the second half the altitude got to us and when you have to chase the entire game that makes it even worse."
