PALM COAST, Fla. - University of Houston stars Raegan Bremer, Emily Gilbreth and Yuka Kajiki each fired 74s Sunday to stand in a tie for 10th following the First Round of the American Athletic Conference Championships on the Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort & Golf Club.
As a team, the Cougars fired a score of 297 to finish the first day in fifth. No. 23 UCF held the lead at 291 to stand one stroke ahead of East Carolina. USF (294) and No. 24 Tulane (296) stood ahead of the Cougars with Memphis (299), No. 47 SMU (299), Cincinnati (305) and Tulsa (312) rounding out the field.
Bremer overcame a double-bogey 7 on her second hole of the day to rattle off 10 consecutive pars before sinking her first birdie of the tournament on No. 13. The Anaheim, Calif., native added another birdie on the 359-yard, par-4 16th hole.
Gilbreth drained a pair of birdies on her first five holes for her first-day score, while Kajiki - competing in her first American Athletic Conference Championships - posted her lone birdie of the day on her final hole to join four others at 74.
Freshman Megan Thothong was tied for 19th at 65, while senior Courtney Ferguson was tied for 31st with a 77.
USF's Ashley Burke held the First-Round lead with a 67 that featured six birdies and no bogeys until her final hole of the day. UCF"s Monifa Sealy and SMU's Alexandra Rossi were tied for second with 70s with three golfers tied for fourth at 71.
SECOND ROUND on MONDAY
The tournament continues at 7 a.m. (CDT) Monday with 18 holes with the Final Round on Tuesday. For Monday's Second Round, Houston will compete in threesomes with student-athletes from No. 24 Tulane and Memphis and start off No. 1.
Ferguson will start the day for the Cougars at 7:50 a.m. (CDT), Monday, with Thothong (8 a.m. CDT), Kajiki (8:10 a.m. CDT), Gilbreth (8:20 a.m. CDT) and Bremer (8:30 a.m. CDT) following.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
While this will be the first time that Houston has competed as a team at the American Athletic Conference Championships, this is the second straight season the Cougars are represented at this postseason event.
A year ago, Ferguson, Bremer and Gilbreth competed as individuals. Bremer finished with a score of 225 to finish fourth on the way to being named to the All-American Athletic Conference Team.
As a first-year program during the 2013-14 season, the Cougars were not allowed to compete for team championships under NCAA rules.
UP NEXT
Following the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Cougars will learn their NCAA postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show at 6 p.m., April 27 on the Golf Channel.
Eighteen teams and six individuals not on those teams will compete at one of four NCAA Regionals on May 7-9. The 2015 NCAA Regional sites are: Lonnie Poole Golf Course, hosted by NC State in Raleigh, N.C.; Warren Golf Course, hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.; Briggs Ranch Golf Club, hosted by UTSA in San Antonio, Texas and Entrada and Snow Canyon Country Club, hosted by BYU in St. George, Utah.
The low six teams and low three individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 22-27 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
