QUERENCIA, LOS CABOS, Mexico - University of Houston senior and defending individual champion Roman Robledo fired a 69 on Sunday morning to tie for seventh and help lead the Cougars into a tie for fifth place following the First Round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate
Competing on the 6,894-yard, par-71 course at Querencia Golf Club, Robledo drained five birdies through his first 18 holes, including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 7 and 8 to lead Houston. A year ago, the Harlingen, Texas, native won the individual title with a score of 12-under-par 204.
As a team, the Cougars, who stand at No. 35 in the latest Golfstat rankings, posted a score of 1-over-par 285 to tie with No. 13 Wake Forest after the first day.
No. 2 Florida State held the First-Round lead at 275 to finish one stroke in front of No. 12 USF. No. 14 Stanford (282) and No. 19 Washington (282) were tied for third with Lamar (286), No. 11 Vanderbilt (287), No. 47 Mississippi (287) and No. 9 Baylor (288) rounding out the top-10 team leaders.
After leading the Cougars at the spring-opening Bayou City Collegiate Championship last weekend, junior Blair Hamilton continued his steady play with an even-par 71 on Sunday. The Burlington, Ontario, Canada, native birdied three of his first five holes and stood in a tie for 18th with his total.
Bogeying two of his first five holes, freshman and Deer Park High product Michael Perras rebounded with a birdie and eight pars during a nine-hole stretch and was tied for 23rd at 72.
Other Cougars in action were senior Kyle Pilgrim (t-36th, 73) and freshman Alan De Bondt (62nd, 77).
USF's Rigel Fernandes finished with a 64 to stand atop the individual leaderboard. No. 37 Hank Lebioda and No. 31 Rowin Caron, both of Florida State, Stanford's Viraat Badhwar and Lamar's Louis Bemberg were tied for second with 67s, while Washington star and No. 1 ranked Cheng-Tsung Pan finished sixth at 68.
SECOND ROUND on MONDAY
The tournament continues with the Second Round on Monday with a 9 a.m., shotgun start. Houston will compete in foursomes with student-athletes from Wake Forest, Lamar and Vanderbilt.
Robledo will begin off No. 6 with Hamilton (No. 7), Perras (No. 8), Pilgrim (No. 9) and De Bondt (No. 10) competing on subsequent holes.

Following the Querencia Cabo Collegiate, the Cougars return to action when they play host to the Border Olympics on March 13-14 at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas. A year ago the Cougars and Robledo swept the team and individual championships for the third straight tournament to open the spring season.
