HUMBLE, Texas - Battling wind, cold and rain throughout the day, the University of Houston Men's Golf program stood in fourth place Friday night with a team score of 293 following the First Round of the Bayou City Collegiate Championship.
Second-Round play was suspended due to darkness and will resume at 7:30 a.m., Saturday, on the 6,967-yard, par-72 Tournament Course at Golf Club of Houston. The tournament was originally scheduled with 54 holes over three days, but coaches and administrators elected to play as many holes as possible each day with weather permitting.
Following the completion of the Second Round, teams will take a short break before starting Final Round action late morning/early afternoon Saturday.
Admission is free, and all fans are invited to attend. Fans can follow live scoring by visiting Golfstat.com and following the appropriate links or by clicking here.
Sophomore Matt Scobie and juniors Blair Hamilton and Vincent Martino each fired even-par 72 to lead the Cougars and finish the First Round in a tie for ninth place.
After posting a bogey and double bogey on two of his first three holes, Scobie settled down in the opening round, sinking three birdies without a bogey over the final 15 holes.
Hamilton struggled early as well with three bogeys on his first eight holes. However, the Burlington, Ontario, Canada, native rallied with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 and closed out the round with seven straight pars for his top-10 showing.
Playing as an individual, Martino drained three birdies during his first 18 holes to tie for ninth.
Freshman Michael Perras and redshirt freshman Joshua Gibbons were tied for 20th with 73s. Perras jumped out to 2-under-par through 12 holes, thanks to a birdie and the team's lone eagle of the round, but faltered with three bogeys over the final six holes.
Gibbons made his collegiate debut in stroke play, finishing with three birdies on Friday.
Other Cougars in action were senior Roman Robledo (76, t-50th), freshman Alan De Bondt (77, t-59th), sophomore Emmett Oh (77, t-59th), senior Kyle Pilgrim (79, t-76th) and redshirt freshman Papito Gonzalez (79, t-76th).
