PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Houston sophomores Micaela Bouter and Ashley Grijalva were named American Athletic Conference Female Diver and Swimmer of the week, respectively, after impressive weekends at the Texas Diving Invitational and the Phill Hansel Invitational.
Bouter has won the honor the last three times it has been awarded. This is Grijalva's first weekly honor and the first for a Houston swimmer.
Bouter is coming off great finishes at the Texas Diving Invitational, where she advanced to finals in both the 1-meter and 3-meter. In the 3-meter, the Johannesburg, South Africa, native captured second place with a total score of 337.35, just 7.65 points shy of the top spot. The sophomore followed that performance with an eighth overall finish in the 1-meter dive, with a total of 288.65.
Grijalva had a record-breaking weekend; she is now the program record holder in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke. On Friday night, the Gilbert, Ariz. native won the individual championship in the 100-yard breaststroke. She initially broke Szintia Szanto's record in prelims with a time of 1:02.26 and followed in finals with a time of 1:01.74. Grijalva continued her dominating performance Saturday night as she broke another school record in the 200-yard breaststroke as she nabbed a second place finish, with a time of 2:13.68. Both her time qualify her for the NCAA B standard.
