DALLAS, Texas -- Houston Volleyball's third set rally wasn't enough as the Cougars fell in four (14-25, 15-25, 28-26, 17-25) to first place SMU Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars drop to 17-11 on the year, 7-9 in the American Athletic Conference while SMU improves to 25-3, 15-1 in league play. SMU's only loss in conference play came in a three-set sweep by Houston.
Houston fell to a 2-0 deficit heading into the half, but the Cougars didn't give up as they battled back in the third set. UH jumped out to a 4-0 lead to open the set as SMU fought back and tied the set, 6-6. From there both teams went point-for-point until Houston took the lead, 18-16, forcing a Mustang timeout. Both teams continued to battle back and forth eventually going into extra points, but Houston came out on top with an SMU attack error and a service ace by Courtney Smith to seal the win, 28-26.
Freshman hitter Brookah Palmer led the Cougars with 16 kills and 13 digs, marking her 12th double-double of the season. Redshirt freshman Chenelle Walker followed with 11 kills, hitting a team-leading .389 against SMU. Walker also posted five blocks.
Senior libero Olivia O'Dell posted 27 digs in the four-set match. She has now totaled 609 digs this season becoming the fourth Cougar in school history to accomplish that feat. O'Dell has recorded 1,475 career digs, the sixth most in school history.
