Newcomers Lead Volleyball to 2-0 Season Start

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Starting off the season on a high note, the University of Houston volleyball team defeated Lamar University in four sets (28-26, 21-25, 25-13, 25-21) during the Delta Zeta Classic hosted by Texas State.
In their last meeting, Houston (2-0) swept Lamar 3-0 during a non-conference home match in 2011. This year, the two teams battled back and forth. The Cougars lead the series 41-21-1.
Houston fell behind in the opening set, 5-0, before scoring off two errors by the Cardinals. Houston fought back to gain control of the game with big hits by Emily Howard and Cortney Warren, making it 17-16. The teams went point for point until the Cougars on kills by Warren and setter Sophie Paine.
The Cardinals took the second set over Houston, 25-21, recording less attack errors and a .385 hitting average compared to the Cougars.
In the third set, Houston held the Cardinals to just 13 points (25-13). The volleyball team took the final set 25-21.
Warren led the Cougars again with 20 kills on 49 attempts (.224 hitting percentage). True freshman Sarita Mikals followed with 15 kills. As a team, Houston had 55 total kills compared to the Cardinals 36, half coming from Cortney Moore and Sierra Whitaker.
Transfer Paine recorded 46 of the 49 total assists for Houston.

Tomorrow, Houston faces host team Texas State at 6:30 p.m. in the final game of the Delta Zeta Classic.
