HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team fell 183-106 to No. 6 Texas A&M at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Friday afternoon.
This was the Cougars last meet and doubled as senior day before the squad will rest for the Conference USA Championships hosted at the CRWC Feb 15-18. Although head coach Augie Busch was only around for a year with the team, the impact the seniors left on the program was not lost.
"Those girls meant a lot," said Busch. "They've all left their mark on this programs by being great swimmers and great people. We're going to miss them and wish them the best of luck after they graduate and hope they remain close to this swimming and diving program."
With the C-USA Championships being weeks away, the focus has been on preparing for that meet. The No. 6 Aggies did not make things easier in the pool but Busch worried more about the efforts and confidence rather than times. Although a number of swimmers set season bests.
"People feel good about where we are at this time of the year. There were some performances that could've been better but it's just kind of a funny time on your body being a couple weeks out."
The Houston divers were challenged by an Aggie diving squad that is certain to face up again in the NCAAs later this year. Freshman Natasha Burgess posted season best marks in the 3M (339.08) and 1M (314.93). Reigning C-USA Diver of the Week junior Julia Lonnegren had a strong performance as well taking third in the 1M (318.08) and fourth in the 3M (331.28).
"That was a great squad for us to compete against," said head diving coach Jane Figueiredo. "We did well today, Natasha turned in a huge performance and it's good to see that performance at this time of year from a freshman."
Senior Kim Eeson turned in two season-best times in the 200 free (1:50.14) and 100 fly (57.74). Eeson claimed first and second respectively in those two events.
Fellow seniors Beccy Hillis (2:22.12) and Natalie Newcomb (2:27.83) finished 2-3 in the 200 breast. Newcomb set a season best in the race.
