HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-21, 25-22) of the Lamar Cardinals Tuesday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
The Cougars improve to 7-3 on the season and have won four of their last five matches.
Senior Lucy Charuk finished the match with 15 kills on a .542 hitting percentage. Freshman Caitlin Ogletree added a game-high 36 assists and freshman Natalie Keck turned in a game-high 13 digs.
"Winning at home is always a big momentum builder," head coach Molly Alvey said. "It's great to play in front of our fans and on our home court. There is a lot of extra energy that helps get us over the hump."
Despite the sweep, Houston played from behind in the first and third sets. With a tough Conference USA schedule on the horizon, Alvey was happy to see her team battle, regain control and come away with the win.
"One thing we did well was battle back," Alvey said. "You didn't really ever see a loss of composure on our side. We kept control of ourselves and took the time to take two points when we sent a server back. In doing that, we regained control."
The Cougars fell behind early in the match but battled back to tie the first set 10-10 on a service ace by Ogletree. After trading points with the Cardinals for much of the set, Houston final broke a 22-22 tie by taking the final three points of the set to win 25-22.
Houston built on the momentum from the first set and took a 14-8 lead in the second. The Cougars opened a 16-10 lead on back-to-back kills from Charuk, but Lamar would claw back to within 21-20 of UH, forcing Alvey to call a timeout. The Cougars capitalized off three Cardinal errors out of the break to win the set, 25-21.
Just as they had in the first set, the Cougars struggled in the third. The Cardinals took a 7-1 lead on UH to open the set, but Alvey let her team play and they came back to tie the score 16-16. After trading leads, Houston took the control for good, 21-20. A timeout was quickly called from the Lamar bench but the Cougars had already done their damage, coming away with a 25-22 win.
