GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Three University of Houston student-athletes posted rounds in the 60s to lead the Cougar golf team to a team season-low round of 281 Friday during the second round of the Desert Shootout.
Bettering their previous season-low round by two strokes, the Cougars moved into 10th place with a team score of 573 on the 7,015-yard, par-72 course at Palm Valley Golf Course. Their team total also was the program's lowest mark through 36 holes this season.
"We played a lot looser today. For whatever reason, we play very tense in the first round and try not to make mistakes instead of just playing our game," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said following Friday's round. "Our guys are learning important lessons out there, and we are starting to apply them on the course."
Sophomore transfer Will Dusenbury tied the team's season low round with a 68 on Friday. The League City, Texas, overcame a slow start on the front nine and blistered the back nine in 6-under-par to move into a tie for 49th place with a 36-hole score of 142.
Dusenbury equaled the team's best round this season by Curtis Reed at the Louisiana Classics and Seminole Intercollegiate.
"Will got off to a poor start but regrouped and had an unbelievable back nine," Dismuke said. "He was a lot of fun to watch."
Freshmen Bryn Flanagan and Wesley McClain each recorded 69s on Friday and were tied for 31st place with a score of 142.
Other Cougars in action included freshman Jesse Droemer (146, t-55th) and freshman Curtis Reed (150, t-74th).
"Will, Bryn and Wesley played great, but we are still waiting for that round where all four rounds go low," Dismuke said. "We will go out there Saturday and hopefully get that done."
Oklahoma leads the team competition after shooting a second-round low 270 for a total of 544. The Sooners stand nine strokes ahead of TCU and 12 shots better than Iowa State. Saint Mary's (Calif.) (557), BYU (559), North Texas (560), Tulsa (561), Denver (569) and Southern Utah (570) rounded out the top-nine team leaders.
BYU's Zachary Blair and Oklahoma's Abraham Ancer each fired 66s for the second straight day to tie for the individual lead at 143. TCU's Tom Hoge and Oklahoma's Eduardo Castiello were tied for third at 135 with three others tied for fifth at 136.
The final round begins at 8:30 a.m. (CST), Saturday, with a shotgun start.
