TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Bettering its first-day score by 13 strokes, the University of Houston golf team moved up to sixth place following the second day of the Seminole Intercollegiate on Saturday afternoon.
After firing a 296 in the opening round Friday morning, the Cougars posted a team score of 283 to rise one place in the team standings on the 7,141-yard, par-71 course at SouthWood Country Club. Although it couldn't move higher in the team standings, Houston narrowed the gap between itself and team leader Arkansas by four shots entering Sunday's final round.
"We had three really strong rounds," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "The course played much easier Saturday, and our three guys took advantage of it. Hopefully, we can get that fourth score in there on Sunday."
Three Cougars - freshmen Curtis Reed and Bryn Flanagan and sophomore transfer Will Dusenbury - posted sub-par rounds and were ranked among the top-16 individual leaders through the second round.
Birdieing the first two holes, Reed added another birdie on the par-3 ninth hole and played bogey-free golf to tie his own mark as the Houston season low. With a two-day score of 140, the Castroville, Texas, native is tied for fourth place.
Flanagan battled through a roller-coaster front nine that included three birdies and back-to-back bogeys. However, the Krugersdorp, South Africa, native settled down and finished the back nine with a birdie and a bogey for a 1-under-par 70. Flanagan enters the final round tied for 11th at 143.
Dusenbury started his day with nine straight pars before firing birdies on the first two holes of the back nine. After posting a bogey on the 15th hole, the League City, Texas, native ended his round with a birdie on the par-4 18th hole to record his season-low 69. He ended the day in a tie for 16th place with a score of 144.
Other Cougars in action were freshmen Jesse Droemer and Wesley McClain, who were each tied for 71st place at 153.
"We did a really good job of identifying those things that we could control. When we do that, we typically play very well," Dismuke said. "Golf is a game where you can't worry about what others do. We have enough to think about with our own games, but we are getting better every tournament."
Arkansas continues to lead the team standings, posting a team score of 4-under-par 564. Host Florida State (567) stood in second place with Kennesaw State (571), North Texas (572) and Mississippi State (578) rounding out the top-five leaders.
On the individual leaderboard, Troy's Zach Portemont fired his second straight 69 for a 36-hole score of 138, one stroke ahead of Arkansas' Sebastian Cappelen and Florida State's Brooks Koepka.
The tournament wraps up at 7:30 a.m. (CST), Sunday. The teams will start off holes No. 1 and No. 10 each day. Fans can follow live stats at GolfStat.com.
