HOUSTON - The University of Houston fell to Tulsa 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 21-25) Sunday afternoon at the Athletics/Alumni Center on Senior Day. The Cougars are now 17-10 on the season and 10-7 in Conference USA play with three matches remaining in the regular season.
Senior Lucy Charuk led all Cougars with 10 kills and seven blocks, while freshman Caitlin Ogletree finished with 17 assists and 10 kills for her eighth double-double this season. Freshman Natalie Keck added a team-high 15 digs.
"You always want your seniors to be able to pull out a victory on senior night, but luckily for them they get to come back against Rice for our actual final match at home," head coach Molly Alvey said. "Overall, from where we've been in the past two or three weeks, this was a much better performance. We've been able to get away with things like point runs against other teams, but you can't do that against good teams. Tulsa is a very good team. They keep the ball in play. Overall, volleyball-wise we looked a lot better than we have."
We can hopefully take a lot of good things from this match into next weekend. We did some good things offensively and defensively. Passing, at times, was more consistent than it has been in a while. When we needed points was when we were falling short. We'll continue to grow and push through and pull out three more victories at the end of the season."
Houston came out battling to open the match against the Golden Hurricane, trading points before Tulsa took a 14-12 lead into a Cougar timeout. UH scored the first point out of the break, but Tulsa slowly pulled away to take a 20-17 lead. The Cougars were able to get within three, 23-20, late in the set, but Tulsa scored two of the next three points to earn the 25-21 win.
Charuk led the Cougars in the first set with four kills on six attempts to hit .667.
The Cougars traded points with Tulsa and held a 10-9 lead early in the second set. The Golden Hurricane regained the lead on the next point and put together a 7-0 run to take a 16-10 lead. A Tulsa service error ended the run and Houston went on to pull within two of the Tulsa lead, 20-18, forcing a timeout from the TU bench. Tulsa scored the first two points out of the timeout before winning the set 25-20.
Charuk and junior Chandace Tryon each had three kills in the second set to lead all Cougars.
Houston jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start the third set, but Tulsa battled back to take a 10-9 lead, their first in the set. After the Golden Hurricane built a 14-11 lead, Alvey called her first timeout. Off the bench, Tulsa went on a 5-1 run to extend its lead to 19-12, prompting a second timeout from the UH bench. Tulsa played one point shy of winning the set, 24-15. The Cougars rallied on a 6-0 run to trail 24-21 but a block by the Golden Hurricane ended the Houston rally.
