Golf Finishes Second at Cabo Collegiate

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico - Lowering its team score for the third straight day, the University of Houston golf team finished second Monday afternoon at the Cabo Collegiate.
The Cougars posted a team score of 291 during the final round on the par-72, 7,070-yard course at Querencia Los Cabos Golf Club, ranked by Golf Digest as the top course in Mexico.
"We continued to struggled as a team this afternoon, but we held our composure and our position in the field," second-year head Jonathan Dismuke said. "We are continuing to improve each day, which is great to see."
Freshman Jesse Droemer fired an even-par 72 during the final round to finish at 218 and tied for 12th place. The Sealy, Texas, native was a model of consistency throughout the day, posting two birdies and 14 pars to lead the Cougars for the second straight tournament.
Fellow freshman Bryn Flanagan posted the team's lowest round of the day with a 1-under-par 71 and tied for 18th place with a score of 221. Flanagan, a native of Krugersdorp, South Africa, birdied two of his final four holes to lead the Cougars during the day.
Freshman Curtis Reed finished with a 72 for a score of 222 to tie with teammate Matt Eschenburg for 22nd place.
"We had three solid rounds by three freshmen today," Dismuke said.
Freshman Wesley McClain tied for 51st place with a score of 233.
Arkansas captured the team championship with a score of 854 after shooting a final-round 277 Monday.
Oregon State finished third at 877 with SMU (878), UC Irvine (880), Cal State Northridge (885), UT Arlington (890), Lamar (898), Santa Clara (900) and Saint Mary's (907) rounding out the top-10 team leaders.
Arkansas' Jamie Marshall posted a final-round 68 to finish at 5-under-par 211, one stroke ahead of teammate Austin Cook and two other players.
"To be in the last group with teams like Arkansas, Oklahoma State and SMU was a great learning experience," Dismuke said.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will take a break from competition before returning to action Oct. 17-18 at the Lone Star Invitational at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas. It will be the team's final action of the fall season.
Hosted by UTSA, that two-day, 54-hole event features only NCAA Division I teams from the state of Texas.
