HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team has a tough task ahead of them as the Cougars play host to the top two teams in the Conference USA standings this weekend.
Houston (12-9; 6-3 C-USA) opens the weekend with a 7 p.m. match against first place Tulsa (19-2; 9-0 C-USA) on Friday. The Golden Hurricane brings an 18-match win streak into the contest, including a 9-0 record in conference action. Tyler Henderson has a league-leading 463 kills for Tulsa and setter Jordan Clampitt leads C-USA with 926 assists.
Having met just nine times on the volleyball court, Houston posts a 5-4 lead in the all-time series despite dropping both matches last season.
Following Friday's contest against Tulsa, Houston will close out the weekend with a match against SMU on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Mustangs currently sit in second place in the C-USA standings with a 16-4 overall record and an 8-1 mark in conference standings. They enter the weekend on a four-match win streak and are led by Dana Powell's 263 kills. Kelli Becerra adds 824 assists, the third most in C-USA.
UH leads the all-time series against the Mustangs with a 9-6 mark but went 0-2 in two meetings last season.
The Cougars are in fourth place in C-USA and recently put together a five-match win streak that was snapped by Memphis on Oct. 15. Houston was able to rebound from the loss and knock off UAB 3-0 to close out the weekend.
Lucy Charuk leads the team with 229 kills, but Chandace Tryon's .386 hitting percentage is tops in C-USA. Amber Brooks' 792 assists rank fourth in C-USA and Amanda Carson's 373 digs are third.
