CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico - Behind senior Matt Eschenburg's 69, the University of Houston golf team stood in first place Saturday after the first day of the Cabo Collegiate.
The Cougars posted a team score of 290 through the first 18 holes to stand five strokes ahead of UC Irvine on the 7,070-yard, par-72 course at Querencia Golf Club.
Following the round, second-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke was pleased with his team's effort.
"We played really solid today," Dismuke said. "We just need to keep getting the ball in play and grind out our rounds. This is a very demanding golf course off the team and around the greens. We must stay patient if we are going to be successful."
Houston was equally well represented on the individual leaderboard with four players among the top-20 leaders. Starting the day on hole No. 15, Eschenburg birded his first two holes and added another birdie on the par-4 fourth hole. The Woodlands, Texas, native came on strong down the stretch, posting three straight pars and back-to-back birdies on holes No. 12 and 13 for the first sub-par round by the Cougars this season.
With his score, Eschenburg, stood alone in second place, one shot behind UC Irvine's Bryan Harris.
"I am really proud of the way that Matt played," Dismuke said.
Freshmen Jesse Droemer fired an even-par 72 to stand in a tie for fifth place. The Sealy, Texas, native recorded four birdies during his round, including back-to-back efforts on holes No. 4 and 5.
Freshman Wesley McClain was tied for 13th place with a 74 after enjoying an opening round with four birdies, while freshman Bryan Flanagan was tied for 17th with a 75, which included an eagle on the 534-yard, par-5 10th hole.
Freshman Curtis Reed was tied for 49th after shooting an 81.
Arkansas (297), Oregon State (297), Pacific (304), UT Arlington (304), SMU (307), host Santa Clara (308), Lamar (310) and Saint Mary's (310) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
The tournament resumes at noon (CST), Sunday and runs through Monday with 18 holes being played each day. Fans can follow live scoring at GolfStat.com.
