HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team got into the win column for the first time this season, defeating Southeastern Louisiana 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-22) Saturday afternoon at the Flo Hyman Invitational at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
With the win, Houston moves to 1-2 on the season.
Much of the early going in the first set saw both teams matching each other point for point but with the score tied 6-6, the Cougars went on a 7-2 run to push the lead, 13-8, forcing a Lion timeout. Out of the break, Southeastern Louisiana continued to battle the Cougars pulling within three points multiple times in the action, but Houston would regain momentum, extending their lead to eight, 21-13. Southeastern Louisiana would call their second timeout of the set to try and regain control but the lead would be too much to overcome and UH would win the first set, 25-14.
In the opening set, Kinsey Cave slapped seven kills on 10 attempts for a .700 hitting percentage to lead the match.
The Cougars came storming off the bench in the second set, scoring the opening seven points. The Lions continued to play tough and came within three points of Houston, 9-5. When it seemed that Southeastern Louisiana was on their heels, Houston used a 7-2 run to pull away, 16-8. The early lead would be too much for the Lions to surpass and UH would go into the deciding set with a 2-0 advantage.
Southeastern Louisiana came into the third set knowing it was either win or go home. They opened the set scoring the first two points. Houston was able to regain the lead over the next three points but the Lions weren't going anywhere. They forced two tie games and stole the lead following the second tie, 9-8. The Cougars moved back in front and continued to do so through the final points of the set.
Cave ended the match with a game-high 16 kills, just one shy of tying her career-best.
Houston will be back on the court for the Flo Hyman Invitational finale against Indiana at 7:30 p.m.
