HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team dropped its Wildcat Classic opener to Eastern Washington, 3-1 (19-25, 17-25, 25-20, 24-26) in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday afternoon.
The Cougars were led by Marluci Toazzi's nine kills, while Tara Roenicke paced the Cougars with 25 assists.
After dropping the first two sets, Houston rebounded to take the deciding third set and continue the match.
Houston jumped on the board first in the third set on a Toazzi kill and in the early going they would lay claim to a five point lead, 14-9. They extended that lead to six, 16-10 before forcing a EWU timeout. Out of the break, the Cougars tacked on three straight points and with the lead 21-12 in Houston's favor the Eagles called a second timeout. UH closed out the set for the win with a kill by Ashley Applequist.
UH was able to gain some momentum with the win but the 2-0 deficit to start the match was too much to overcome and Eastern Washington cemented their win by taking the fourth set, 26-24.
UH falls to 1-4 on the season and they are now 0-2 all-time against the Eagles. Houston will be back on the court at 9 p.m. for their second match of the tournament against host Arizona. They will close out play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Nevada.
Gametracker will be available for Houston's match against Arizona. Fans can also check out the live video stream by going to the All-Access section of the Arizona athletics site. A recap of the match will also be available at UHCougars.com.
