HOUSTON-- Senior setter Kelsey King dished out 33 assists and added a team-high 10 digs to lead the University of Houston volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-19) win over Conference USA rival Southern Miss on Saturday at the Athletics Center.
With the win, the Cougars won for the sixth time in their last seven matches and improved to 13-8 overall and 5-3 in league matches. Southern Miss fell to 13-9 overall and 3-6 in C-USA matches.
The Cougars seized control of the match early with an impressive performance in the first set. After the Golden Eagles pulled to within 5-5, UH rattled off the next eight points to build a 13-5 advantage and never led by fewer than five points the rest of the way.
Set two proved to be much closer throughout, and USM appeared to grab the momentum when a UH attack error handed the Golden Eagles a 24-23 lead. However, senior Justine Farmer knotted the set at 24-24 on the next point and freshman Ingrida Zauere gave the Cougars the lead with a 25-24 advantage.
Junior Kinsey Cave and junior Erin Rice then teamed on a block to end the set and hand the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the match.
In set three, the two teams went back and forth, alternating 11 consecutive points midway through the set. The Golden Eagles pulled to within 17-16, but the Cougars scored four of the next five points for a 21-17 lead and added the set's final three points for the win.
Farmer posted 12 kills to lead the Cougars, while sophomore Lucy Charuk added 11 kills with only one error for an impressive .556 attack percentage.
USM's Stevi Cherry led all players with 14 kills, while Bridget Whalen added 10 digs in the losing effort.
The Cougars return to action at 7 p.m., Tuesday, when they face C-USA rival Rice at Autry Court.
