HOUSTON - Some of the nation's top collegiate divers will be in action this weekend as they compete at the Houston Diving Invitational at UH's own Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
The three-day event features men's and women's divers from Houston, Arizona and Kansas and begins at 10 a.m., Thursday with the women's 1-meter springboard preliminaries. The men's 3-meter preliminaries are slated to start at noon.
The top eight competitors from the preliminaries advance to the finals, which begin at 6 p.m., Thursday with the women's 1-meter event and wraps up with the men's 3-meter competition at 7 p.m.
On Friday, the meet continues with the men's 1-meter event at 10 a.m., followed by the women's 3-meter competition at noon. The top eight finishers advance to the finals, slated to start at 6 p.m. with the men's 1-meter event and conclude at 7 p.m., with the women's 3-meter event.
Saturday's platform competition, which begins at 11 a.m., will be a combined final.
Senior captain Ginni van Katwijk leads the diving corps this season. The 2007 C-USA Newcomer of the Year and a platform diving All-American, van Katwijk has been a steady presence in the Cougar lineup this season.
Freshman Courtney Forcucci has posted the team's season-best scores in both events and was named the C-USA Diver of the Week on Nov. 6.
Freshman Lacey Truelove is competing in her first collegiate season, posting personal-best scores of 256.65 on the 1-meter board and 274.75 in the 3-meter event.
Under the leadership of diving head coach Jane Figueiredo, the Cougar program has established itself as one of the nation's best. In 17 seasons at UH, Figueiredo has guided 23 divers to the NCAA Championships, including 10 performers who earned 35 All-America honors.
Figueiredo enters the 2007-08 season as the six-time defending Conference USA Diving Coach of the Year and has seen her divers sweep all but two C-USA postseason awards.
