CARY, N.C. - The University of Houston golf team wrapped up its 2005-06 regular season Saturday with a fifth-place finish at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate.
UH, which was ranked No. 43 in the latest Golfweek national poll, fired a team score of in the final round to finish with a 54-hole total of 866 on the 6,878-yard, par-72 course at MacGregor Downs Country Club.
Kentucky won the team championship with a score of 854, while Duke was a close second at 858. North Carolina finished third at 860, and Kent State place fourth with a score of 864. Vanderbilt (868), Tulsa (869), host North Carolina State (869), Georgia Southern (870) and Virginia Tech (879) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
Individually, senior Kevin Newman and Pablo Acuna each tied for 16th place at even-par 216 after shooting 72s in the final round. Senior Zach Mowbray, junior Ricky Romano and sophomore Jordan Irwin tied for 30th place at 220.
Duke's Ryan Blaum finished at 14-under-par 202 to finish six strokes ahead of Nicolas Geyger of Tulsa.
The Cougars will take a couple of weeks off before beginning competition at the 2006 Conference USA Championships on April 17-19 at Old Waverly Golf Course in West Point, Miss.
