Golf Finishes Fifth at C-USA Championship

WEST POINT, Miss. - The University of Houston golf team finished fifth Wednesday during the final day of the 2006 Conference USA Championship.
The Cougars, who were tied for the team lead entering the final 18 holes, posted a team score of 300 to finish at 1-over-par 865 on the par-72, 7,000-yard course at Old Waverly Golf Club, for their final standing.
SMU tied for the lowest round of the tournament with a 276 on Wednesday and won the team championship with a 54-hole total of 845, six strokes ahead of UCF. Tulsa (853) and Memphis (856) rounded out the Top Four team leaders.
Individually, junior Pablo Acuna led the Cougars with a 73 in the final round to finish in a tie for 11th place at 2-under-par 214.
Other Cougars in action were Zach Mowbray (t-17th, 217); senior Kevin Newman (t-22nd, 218); sophomore Jordan Irwin (t-34th, 222) and junior Ricky Romano (t-36th, 223).
SMU's Will Dodson posted a tournament low 65 in the final round to finish at 13-under-par 203, five strokes better than UCF's Sonny Nimkhum.
The Cougars must now wait until 5 p.m., May 8 to learn their NCAA postseason fate. The 2006 NCAA Regionals are scheduled to begin May 18 and run through May 20. UH will be looking for its first team appearance in an NCAA Regional since 2002.
