WEST POINT. Miss. - The University of Houston golf team begins play at the 2006 Conference USA Championship as the first round tees off Monday morning.
The Cougars are part of a 12-team field that will be competing on the par-72, 7,000-yard course at Old Waverly Golf Course. The winner of the championship earns the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
The championship will consist of 54 holes with 18 holes to be played each day beginning at 8 a.m. For updated results, please check the official Conference USA website at www.ConferenceUSA.com.
UH, which is ranked No. 42 in the latest Golfweek national poll, comes into the tournament after finishing fifth at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate on April 7-8.
Earlier this season, the Cougars rattled off four consecutive team tournament championships, equaling a feat that had not been accomplished in more than two decades by a UH squad.
Junior Pablo Acuna leads the Cougars with a 72.0 scoring average during the 2005-06, while junior Ricky Romano is a close second at 72.3. Other Cougars scheduled to compete are sophomore Jordan Irwin and seniors Zach Mowbray and Kevin Newman.
That Cougar group is an experienced one, playing together in all but one of the 11 tournaments to date this season.
The Cougars are the only previous team winners in the 12-team field and earned the most golf titles in league history, winning five straight from 1997 to 2001.
