LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The University of Houston golf team stood in fourth place Monday after the first day of competition at the UALR/First Tee Collegiate Classic.
The Cougars fired a team round of 299 in the morning session and then went out and bettered that score by 11 strokes in the afternoon for a 36-hole total of 587, only five strokes behind first-day team leader Lamar.
Texas-Arlington stands in second place at 582, while North Texas is in third place at 586. Middle Tennessee (6030, Missouri State (605), Louisiana-Monroe (605), Oral Roberts (606), Arkansas State (607), Eastern Michigan (608) and Sam Houston State (608) rounded out the Top 10 leaders.
The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., Tuesday, on the 7,221-yard, par-72 course at Chenal Country Club.
Individually, the Cougars boasted two of the top four players. Junior Ricky Romano posted a 1-under-par 141 to stand in second place, one stroke behind first-day leader Austin Welch of North Texas.
Junior Pablo Acuna was tied for third at 142.
Other Cougars in action were sophomore Jordan Irwin (t-24th, 150), senior Zach Mowbray (t-41st, 154) and senior Kevin Newman (79th, 169).
