LAREDO, Texas - After shooting a team score of 309 in the final round, the University of Houston golf team finished in sixth place Saturday at the Border Olympics on the par-72, 7,241-yard layout at Laredo Country Club.
With that, the Cougars saw their winning streak snapped at four. UH entered the weekend as winners of at least a share of the team championship in four consecutive tournaments, a feat that had not been accomplished since the 1984-85 team won its first five tournaments to open the fall season.
The Cougars finished the 54-hole event with a score of 883. Baylor won the team title at 855 and was followed by Memphis (860), Texas-Arlington (867), New Mexico State (869) and Lamar (873). Rice (886), Notre Dame (888), Southeastern Louisiana (889) and South Alabama (891) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
Individually, senior Kevin Newman posted a two-day score of 215 to tie for fifth place. Junior Pablo Acuna tied for 14th after shooting 218 over 54 holes.
Other Cougars in action were junior Ricky Romano (224, t-45th), sophomore Jordan Irwin (226, t-51st) and senior Zach Mowbray (239, t-79th).
Memphis' Keven Fortin-Simard won medallist honors at 13-under-par 203 to finish a stroke ahead of Baylor's Ryan Baca. Texas-Arlington's Zack Reeves and Lamar's Oliver Bekker tied for third at 6-under-par 210.
The Cougars will take a little time off before returning to action on March 27-28 when they compete at the UALR/First Tee Collegiate Classic in Little Rock, Ark.
