HOUSTON - The University of Houston golf team fired a team score of 287 in the final round of the All-American Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Cypresswood Golf Club and won the tournament going away by 13 strokes.
This was the first time since 1997 has been played after being started in 1955 by Dave Williams. However, the tournament is steep in UH golf tradition as the Cougars won its 23 team championship this afternoon.
It was also the second consecutive team win for UH and the second consecutive since under head coach Vince Jarrett that the Cougars have posted two team wins in a season.
Houston finished 11-under par 853 for the tournament, 13 strokes ahead of University of Colorado who finished 2-over par 866, while Middle Tennessee State moved from seventh place yesterday into third place today at 11-over par 875 on the 7,220-yard, par-72, Tradition Course.
The Blue Raiders tied Houston and Texas-Arlington for today's best round of 287.
Kansas (877), Texas Arlington (879), Memphis (884), Southeastern Louisiana (885), Louisiana-Lafayette (886), Jacksonville State (899) and North Texas (910) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
Individually, Keven Fortin-Simard of Memphis shot an even-par 72 to stay at 8-under-par 208 to win the tournament by one stroke over Daniel Willett of Jacksonville State who also tallied an even-par 72 in the final round.
Four players led by Houston's Ricky Romano posted a three-under 69 for the lowest round of the day. With his 69, Romano moved into third place at six-under 210.
Zach Mowbray and Jordan Irwin were also two of nine total players to finish the tournament under par. Mowbray ended up in fifth place, while Jordan Irwin was right behind Mowbray in sixth position.
Junior Pablo Acuna ended in tie with two other golfers for 12th place with a 2-over-par 218.
The Cougars return to the course next Monday at the Louisiana Classic hosted by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
