The Cougars (15-9, 6-3 C-USA) mauled a season-high 17 blocks and fended off UTEP's (5-17, 1-7 C-USA) game five comeback effort. Houston snapped its six match skid in five-game matches. The last time the Cougars won a 3-2 decision came in the season-opener at Towson.
Houston jumped out to an early 10-3 advantage in the deciding game behind four Sunshine Misa-Uli kills. The Miners responded with six consecutive points to close within 10-9, but the Cougars got a pair of blocks and a Becca Sartori kill to edge out a 15-11 victory.

Both teams came out firing on all cylinders in game one, attacking at over a .330 clip. The game featured 20 ties and seven lead changes. It was the Miners who tallied the final run, scoring five of the final six points. A pair of ball handling errors along with a Reyes ace gave UTEP a 30-26 win.
Houston fought back in the second game using seven Farmer kills to claim a 30-28 win, but UTEP responded with a 32-30 victory in game three.
With their backs against the wall in game four, the Cougars overturned an early 19-16 deficit to catch the Miners at 21-21. After trading sideouts, Houston received a critical block from Sartori and Martin to go ahead 25-23. Farmer ripped a trio of kills, the last from McAnelly, to give the Cougars a 30-25 win.
