HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team lost a 3-0 decision to Sacramento State (27-30, 17-30, 28-30) on Sunday evening at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
"We couldn't execute the scouting report tonight," head coach Bill Walton said. "We knew exactly what Sacramento State was going to do. They hit every ball where we told the girls they were going to hit it, and we couldn't stop them."
Becca Sartori paced Houston pumping out 13 kills, and five blocks on the evening. In her season debut, Cinthia Piva added seven kills to go along with five digs. Jaci Gonzalez reached for 27 digs during the three-game match.
The opening game of the match changed hands nine times, and featured 14 ties. With the score tied at 25, the Hornet defense forced back-to-back Cougar attack errors that led to a 30-27 game one win.
Sacramento State used that momentum to jump out to a quick 11-3 advantage in the second game. That was all the Hornets needed to take game two, 30-17.
Houston (4-3) fell behind 18-12 in the third game before charging back to get within a single point at 28-27. The game ended on three consecutive side-outs giving Sacramento State the sweep.
The Cougars return to action next weekend hitting the road for the first this season. At the Kansas State Invitational, Houston opens with national runner-up and No. 6 Minnesota on Friday evening before hooking up with Kansas State and Florida for Saturday tilts.
"There are no easy matches ahead," Walton said. "Next weekend is going to be tougher than a NCAA Regional."
