Golf Finishes Third at Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic

FLOWER MOUND, Texas - The University of Houston golf team posted a team score of 303 during the final round Tuesday to finish in third place at the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic at Lantana Golf Club.
The Cougars finished the season-opening, 54-hole event with a team score of 16-over-par 880, four strokes behind team champion Sam Houston State on the 7,147-yard, par-72 course.
Jacksonville State finished second at 879, while Texas-San Antonio (885), Louisiana-Monroe (887), Western Kentucky (888), Louisiana-Lafayette (889), Middle Tennessee (889), Arkansas State (890) and host North Texas (892) rounded out the Top 10 leaders.
Individually, junior Ricky Romano earned his first Top 10 finish of the year despite shooting a 6-over-par 78 in the final round. The Murietta, Calif., native, who fired a career-best 67 in the second round Monday afternoon, tied for seventh place at 218.
Other Cougar linksters in action were 2005 All-Conference USA Third-Team honoree Pablo Acuna (t-16th, 221), Jordan Irwin (t-24th, 224), Kevin Newman (t-38th, 227), Steven Frazier (t-38th, 227) and Zach Mowbray (t-42nd, 228).
Arkansas State's Andrew Ross fired an even-par 72 in the final round to win medalist honors at 4-under-par 212. Sam Houston State's Robert Gwin finished second at 214, while Troy Hawkins of Western Kentucky placed third at 215.
The Cougars return to action in less than a week when they tee off at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., starting Monday.
