HOUSTON - The University of Houston golf team opens its 2004-05 season Monday when it competes at the Mean Green Classic on the 7,100-yard, par-72 course at Lantana Golf Club.
A year ago, the Cougars opened their season in fine fashion by sweeping the team and individual championships. UH finished at 3-over-par 867 to win the team title in a 14-team field, while Zach Mowbray earned his first career collegiate individual tournament championship.
Mowbray again will be in the Cougar lineup Monday. He was one of only three golfers to compete in all 12 tournaments last season and finished with a 75.8 scoring average.
Junior Pablo Acuna, a 2005 All-Conference USA Third-Team honoree, also competed in all 12 tournaments last year and led the Cougars with a 74.0 average. Junior Ricky Romano was a close second to Romano with a 74.2 average and was the final player to compete all season.
Sophomore Jordan Irwin, who won medalist honors at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, finished with a 75.4 average and will hit the links Monday. Senior Kevin Newman appeared in eight tournaments last season and added a 75.5 scoring average.
This will be the first of five fall tournaments for the Cougars. From here, the team will compete at the Kansas Invitational on Sept. 19-20 in Lawrence, Kan.
