Golf Finishes Second at First Tee/UALR Collegiate Classic

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Junior Kevin Newman and freshman Jordan Irwin earned Top 10 individual finishes at the First Tee/UALR Collegiate Classic to help lead the University of Houston golf team to a second-place showing Tuesday.
Irwin shot a 1-over-par 73 during the final 18 holes at Chenal Country Club to make his move in the final standings and tie for 10th place, while Newman posted a 77 and finished in a tie for eighth place.
As a team, the Cougars posted a team score of 304 in the final round and finished only a shot behind team champion Arkansas State with a two-day total of 889. Sam Houston State (893), Ball State (894) and Louisiana-Monroe (900) rounded out the Top Five team leaders.
With its performance, UH recorded its fourth Top Two team finish this season and its sixth Top Five finish of the 2004-05 season.
Tuesday's tournament capped the end of a busy month for the Cougars. UH competed in five tournaments during March alone, including two tournaments during a five-day span to wrap up the month.
Other Cougars in action this week were sophomore Pablo Acuna (74-76-74 - 224, T-18th), junior Zach Mowbray (73-72-80 - 225) and sophomore Ricky Romano (79-75-82 - 236, t-67th)
Arkansas-Little Rock's Patrick Sullivan shot a 70 in the final round and earned medallist honors with a 54-hole total of 7-under-par 210, eight strokes better than Oral Roberts' Mauricio Tamez.
The Cougars return to action on April 4-5 when they compete at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas.
