HOUSTON - Marit Bloemer, Sasha Schwendenwein and Andrea Pa'lmai each recorded multiple-event wins to help lead the University of Houston Swimming & Diving program to a 122-112 win over Arkansas on Thursday at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
The score between the two teams remained close throughout the day, but the Cougars dominated both diving events to take the lead and iced the win by winning each of the final four individual swimming events to defeat the Lady Razorbacks for the second consecutive season.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 2-2 in dual meets this season. The Cougars return to action at 6 p.m., Friday when they meet Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. UH doesn't return to compete at home until Dec. 31 when it plays host to Findlay at Melcher Natatorium. Time for that home meet has not been announced yet.
Bloemer won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:25.04 and finished her evening with a time of 5:07.77 in the 500-yard freestyle to finish nearly six seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
Schwendenwein won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.82 and capped her day with another first-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle with a clocking of 52.81.
Pa'lmai captured top honors in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.39 and added a similar finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.24.
A pair of Cougar freshmen dominated the diving events, sweeping the top two places. Tania Cagnotto won the 3-meter diving competition with 329.70 points and finished second in the 1-meter event with 306.75 points. Anastasia Pozdniakova captured the 1-meter title with 319.73 points - the first win of her collegiate career - and placed second on the 3-meter board with 322.20 points.
Freshman Lauren VanCleave earned a pair of second-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.
