CHOUDRANT, La. - The University of Houston finished seventh at the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Invitational on Tuesday with a final team score of 881.
The Cougars, who returned to action after nearly a month-long layoff, finished 26 strokes behind team champion Mississippi. UH was schedule to play at the Adams Cup of Newport in late September, but the threat of Hurricane Rita forced the cancellation of all athletics events.
Texas-Arlington (859), Mississippi State (865), Louisiana-Lafayette (878), Rice (878) and Louisiana-Monroe (880) rounded out the Top Seven team leaders.
Individually, junior Ricky Romano fired an even-par 72 on the 7,105-yard course at Squire Creek Country Club to finish the 54-hole tournament in a tie for 14th place at 1-over-par 217. Junior Pablo Acuna tied for 18th after finishing at 218.
Other Cougars in action were senior Zach Mowbray (219, t-23rd), senior Kevin Newman (233, t-80th), and senior Brett Burke (233, t-80th) who was competing in his first tournament as a Cougar.
Texas-Arlington's Zack Reeves won on the fourth hole of three-way playoff against Mississippi's Chris Rogers and Louisiana-Monroe's Tim Kunick to win medalist honors. The three players tied at 5-under-par 211 before the playoff.
The Cougars return to action on Nov. 3-4 when they compete at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif., during the final fall tournament of the season.
