IRVING - Outside hitter Kariny Ritter was named Co-Conference USA Player of the Week for the second consecutive week on Monday afternoon as announced by the league office. Ritter shares the honor this week with Kelly-Anne Billingy of Marshall.
Ritter paced the Houston offense to another 2-0 weekend, storming past C-USA foes Southern Miss and UCF. She unleashed an amazing 6.12 kills per game on a .339 attack percentage for the weekend and tallied double-double in both matches.
Her 31 kills against UCF was a new career-high, while her .352 attack percentage was her second best effort of the season. Seven of her 31 kills came in deciding game five against the Golden Knights.
"Kariny's hitting carried us at critical times," head coach Bill Walton said after the UCF match. "We passed and hit at a high level in the fifth game, but we still need to work on our blocking."
The Brazilian has registered double-digit kills in 11 consecutive matches, including ripping at least 15 kills in nine of her last 11 outings. Houston is 7-2 this season when Ritter leads the team in kills.
Ritter had another strong, all-around weekend, tying for second on the squad averaging 0.50 blocks per game for the weekend. She was also fourth on the team adding 2.75 digs per contest.
This is the third C-USA Player of the Week award for Ritter during her Cougar career. Her initial league honor came back on Aug. 29.
Houston (10-8, 5-1 C-USA) returns to action sporting a five-match winning streak, as Walton looks to pick up his 600th career victory on Friday evening against C-USA frontrunner Marshall (14-5, 6-1 C-USA). First serve at the Athletics/Alumni Center is slated for 7pm.
