CHOUDRANT, La. - The University of Houston golf team bettered its first round score by nine strokes in the afternoon session and finished the first day of the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Invitational in sixth place Monday with a team score of 583.
After shooting a team score of 296, the Cougars headed to the clubhouse in ninth place but rallied with a score of 287 in the afternoon to move up three places. The Cougars' second-round score tied for the lowest of that round.
The Cougars stood 18 strokes behind first-day leader Mississippi. Texas-Arlington finished second with a score of 570, while Mississippi State was third at 574. Louisiana-Lafayette (581) and Louisiana-Monroe (581) rounded out the Top Five team leaders on the 7,105-yarde, par-72 course at Squire Creek Country Club.
Individually, UH senior Zach Mowbray fired a 72 in the morning round and followed that with a 2-under-par 70 to tie for seventh place at 142.
The third and final round begins at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday with a shotgun start.
UH junior Pablo Acuna was tied for 16th place at 144, which included a Cougar-low 69 in the second round, and junior Ricky Romano was tied for 20th at 145. Other UH linksters in action were Kevin Newman (155, t-80th) and Brett Burke (158, t-89th), who was making his debut as a Cougar.
Louisiana-Monroe's Tim Kunick grabbed the first-day lead after shooting an 8-under-par 136, thanks in part to a 66 in the first round. Mississippi's Larry Blatt, Jr. was second at 137.
