BATON ROUGE, La. - Sophomore diver Anna Kiess earned a pair of second-place finishes, but it would not be quite enough as the University of Houston swimming and diving team dropped a pair of dual meets to host LSU and Rice at the LSU Natatorium on Friday afternoon.
Kiess, a four-time Conference USA Diver of the Week honoree this season, collected 305.78 points on the 3-meter board and 305.54 points on the 1-meter competition.
The Cougars fell to LSU 82-31 and lost to Rice 76-35. With the losses, the Cougars dropped to 5-9 overall in dual meets this season.
Junior captain Azul Almazan finished third on the 3-meter board with 304.80 points and placed fourth on the 1-meter board.
On the swimming side, sophomore Szintia Szanto earned a second-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley after a clocking of 4:28.29. The Budapest, Hungary, native also finished third in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard breaststroke.
Making her collegiate debut, freshman Merit Bloemer finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:07.47 and finished fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Stacey Williams finished third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.97.
The Cougars wrap up their 2005 regular-season road schedule at noon Saturday, when they meet Sun Belt Conference member New Orleans at the UNO Lakefront Arena Aquatic Center.
