SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Junior Stacey Williams won a pair of individual events to help lead the University of Houston swimming and diving team to a 73-62 win over Incarnate Word on Friday at Barshop Natatorium.
The Perth, Western Australia, native took top honors in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.61 and added another first-place showing in the 54.51 to lead the Cougars. UH improved to 5-7 overall in dual meets this season.
While the final score appeared to be close, the Cougars dominated the meet, winning seven individual events and both relays. Once UH built a commanding lead, head coach Mark Taylor took the opportunity to cross-train many of his swimmers during events in which they normally didn't compete.
In addition to Williams, other Cougar first-place competitors were Alejandra Salazar in the 500-yard freestyle (2:02.34), Kristin Bay in the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.74), Kat Lau in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.13), Szintia Szanto in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.58) and Randee Billips in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.98).
The Cougars' 200-yard medley relay team of Nicole Vaiana, Jenny Hagen, Lau and Amanda Rutter started the day for UH on a positive note, taking first place with a time of 1:54.25.
The Cougars' 200-yard freestyle relay team (Williams, Tatjana Banjeglav, Vaiana and Bay) capped the day with a win after a clocking of 1:40.82.
