HOUSTON - In the final game of the Park Plaza Kick-Off Tournament at the University of Houston, the Cougars fell 3-0 to No. 10 Cal on Sunday afternoon.
The match against the Golden Bears marked the second time in as many games that the Cougars faced an opponent ranked in the AVCA/CSTV Top 25, the first game was a 3-2 lose to No. 14 Kansas State on Saturday.
Throughout all three games on Sunday, Houston managed to stay close to the Bears and started off each game with a 3-4 point lead. But the experienced Cal team managed to put it all together in the final points of each game to close out the match in three straight games, 30-22, 30-27 and 30-26.
Houston struggled to put a stop on the taller Cal front line as the Bears had three players turn in double-digit kills and a fourth was one away from the double.
The Bears took advantage of their size by posting 23 blocks on the night to the Cougars' 13 stops.
For the Cougars, sophomore Kelly McAnelly had a match-high kill performance with 14 stuffs and setters senior Mirel Vasconcellos and Jennifer Hohl split time at the position, handing out 20 and 15 assists respectively and junior libero Jaci Gonzalez recorded a match-high 18 digs for the Cougars.
Houston (1-2) gets back into action this week against in-state rival Texas (3-0), the Longhorns and Cougars will get at it beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7 in the Athletics/Alumni Center.
