LAWRENCE, Kan. - University of Houston golfer Pablo Acuna fired a 2-under-par 70 during the final round to finish in third place at the Kansas Invitational at Alvamar Golf Club.
The Guatemala City, Guatemala, native recorded a career-low round and enjoyed his best career finish as a collegiate player.
With his performance and two other Top 20 individual finishes, the Cougars finished fourth in the 13-team field with a 54-hole score of 884 on the 6,950-yar, par-72 course. Despite being one of only four teams to break 300 as a team on Tuesday, the Cougars were unable to make up any ground against host Kansas, which finished at 870, seven strokes ahead of Kansas State.
Texas-San Antonio finished in third place at 882, while Nebraska (888), Wichita State (893), Oklahoma City (901), Northern Iowa (902), Western Kentucky (908) and Illinois State (908) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
Sophomore Ricky Romano remained consistent as he fired an even-par 72 during the final 18 holes to finish in fifth place at 217. It was the second consecutive Top Five individual finish for the Murietta, Calif., native.
Junior Zach Mowbray, who won medalist honors at the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic on Sept. 14, finished in a tie for 17th at 221. Other Cougars in action were Jordan Hasbrouck (t-54th, 233), Jordan Irwin (t-66th, 237) and Daniel Angenscheidt (74th, 251).
Individually, Kevin Ward won medalist honors at the KU event on the second playoff hole to break tie with Kansas State's Matt VanCleave.
The Cougars will take some time off before returning to action on Oct. 11-12 during the Pepperdine/Club Glove Invitational at Saticoy Country Club in Camarillo, Calif.
