LONG BEACH, Calif. - University of Houston sophomore Ricky Romano fired a 2-under-par 68 during the second round Thursday to stand in a tie for fourth place after the first day of the Del Walker Intercollegiate at Virginia Country Club.
Romano, who has finished among the Cougars' Top Two individual leaders in each of the first three fall tournaments to date, opened the tournament on the par-71, 6,538-yard course with a 3-over-par 74. However, he rallied in the afternoon session for his placing after the first day.
The Cougars stood in a tie for fourth place with Denver and San Jose State with 36 hole scores of 585, 13 strokes behind Lamar. UC Irvine was second at 573, while host Long Beach State stood in third place at 581.
UC Santa Barbara (586), Texas-San Antonio (586), New Mexico State (294) and Arizona JV (595) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes at 9:08 (CST), Friday.
Playing in his first tournament as a Cougar, sophomore Jeremy Reed was in a tie for 19th place after shooting 4-over-par 145 through the first 36 holes. Other Cougars in action were Jordan Hasbrouck (148, t-30th), Pablo Acuna (151, t-43rd) and Zach Mowbray (151, t-43rd).
Individually, Lamar's Dawie VanDerWalt stood atop the leaderboard after shooting back-to-back 69s on Thursday. Nick Olivarri of Texas-San Antonio was a close second at 139, while UC Irvine's Brian Edick was in third at 141.
This will be the Cougars' final fall tournament of the 2004 season. Following Friday's final round, UH won't return to competitive action again it opens the 2005 spring season at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, La., on March 7-8.
