Third Consecutive Win Comes Against USF

HOUSTON - The Houston Cougars volleyball team pulled off its third consecutive victory Saturday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center in a 3-0 sweep for the second time in as many nights, this time coming off of the visiting USF Bulls.
For Houston (7-16, 5-5) it was the third match this season that the Cougars have put away their opponents in straight games, as they downed the Bulls (6-15, 3-6) 30-28, 30-22 and 30-26.
Junior Jennifer Hohl posted her third consecutive double-double this season with 23 assists and 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the year and fourth in five outings.
Leading all players in the match was sophomore Kelly McAnelly who turned in a match high 16 kills on 37 attempts for an attack percentage of .216. Both senior Loure Dews and sophomore Becca Sartori hit in double figures with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Up 20-15 in the first game, the Cougars allowed the Bulls to go on a 9-1 run and to take the lead at 21-24. Houston battled back to tie the game at 28-28 with an ace by junior Jaci Gonzalez.
Gonzalez continued to hold serve as the Cougars claimed the next two points with a block by Dews and Sartori and then finished the game on a kill my McAnelly off an assist from Hohl.
Houston handled Game 2 quickly as the team hit .250 in the game and had 19 kills.
The third and final game was a back-and-forth battle through much of the game until Houston took the lead at 28-25. USF head coach Claire Lessinger was given a yellow card for complaining to the referee. USF won the next point, but during the rally, Lessinger was issued a red card, which gave Houston a 29-26 lead.
Houston closed out the match 30-26 with a block by Sartori and Hohl.
The Cougars continue their home stand next week as Lamar comes to visit in the Athletics/Alumni Center on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
