HOUSTON - With three remaining home matches in the 2004 season, the Houston volleyball team is looking to extend its three-match winning streak as they face the Cardinals of Lamar University on Tuesday and conference foe TCU on Saturday.
Needing to pick up some wins in the team's longest home stand of the season, the Cougars ripped off three straight victories last week to pull up to sixth place in the Conference USA standings at 5-5 after 3-0 victories over UAB and USF.
The Cougars will be looking to push that home win streak to four as Lamar comes to the Athletics/Alumni Center Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
Historically the two teams have met 59 times in their history where Houston holds the advantage 38-21. Only Rice and Texas A&M have faced off with the Cougars in more matches, 63 times with the Aggies and 61 times with the Owls.
The first meeting between the teams happened in the Cougars' inaugural season back in 1974, when they met up for five matches during the year with Houston going 2-3 that first season.
Last season Houston came away with a 3-1 victory at Lamar, and is looking to extend upon their historical lead. Lamar (8-19) is coming off of back-to-back losses over the weekend and is 2-18 in their last 20 outings.
Freshman right side hitter Molli Abel leads the team with 366 kills, followed by middle blocker Bucki Okoh with 269, and outside hitter Erica Brown with 250.
On Saturday, the Cougars play host to TCU (17-8, 7-3) who holds the No. 4 spot in the league standings where they too defeated UAB and USF over the weekend.
In the past two seasons, the Cougars have come out on top of the Frogs 3-0 and 3-1, and hold a 6-1 lead in the all-time series.
Leading TCU this year is the trio of right side hitter Ellen Rehme, outside hitter Dominika Szabo and middle blocker Anna Vaughn. Rehme leads the team with 386 spikes and is hitting .256, Szabo is second for the Frogs with 336 kills and a hitting percentage of .283, while Vaughn has 315 kills and a .314 hitting percentage to go along with her 57 total blocks.
The Frogs are averaging 16.2 kills, 1.4 blocks, 2.3 aces, and 15.8 digs per game but are also allowing 15.6 digs per game by opponents, and are being blocked 2.2 times per game.
Action begins with Lamar at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and again at 7:00 p.m. against TCU on Saturday. Both matches will be held at the Athletics/Alumni Center on the main campus of the University of Houston with admission free to the public.
