HOUSTON - One day after defeating Southern Miss at home in the Conference USA opener, the Cougar volleyball team came up short in a five-game match with Tulane at the Athletics/Alumni Center on Saturday night.
For the second time in as many days, the Cougars dropped their opening game 18-30 but responded with wins in Games 2 and 3 at finals of 30-28 and 30-25, respectively. However, this time Houston couldn't hold on for the win as Tulane grabbed Games 4 and 5 at scores of 30-27 and then a heart-breaking 15-13 in the decisive Game 5.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 1-1 in conference play while the Green Waves improves to 1-1 on their conference season after dropping their opener to TCU on Friday.
The Cougars were paced by sophomore Kelly McAnelly who followed up her career-high performance against Southern Miss on Friday with her sixth double double of the season. McAnelly turned in 29 kills on 65 attempts with nine errors while hitting .308 in the match, and picked up 12 digs along the way on defense.
Junior Jennifer Hohl set a career high for assists for the second time in as many matches as she topped her old high of 45 set Friday night against the Golden Eagles with 59 in tonight's loss.
Tow other Cougars recording double-digit kill numbers were junior Kariny Ritter, 19, and sophomore Becca Sartori who had 12 throw-downs on the night.
On the night, the Cougars were out blocked 14-9, thanks mostly to Tulanes Iman Houston who had eight stops in the match.
In the final game, Houston found themselves ahead at 6-2, but allowed the Green Wave to string together a 7-1 run that left the Cougars trailing 8-9 before tying it all up at nine apiece.
The two teams then battled through the remainder of the match before Tulane held on for the 15-13 win.
Next week the Cougars (2-12, 1-1) hit the road with stops at ECU and Charlotte next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8 and 9.
