Volleyball drops two in California

IRVINE, California - The University of Houston volleyball team dropped two matches Saturday, the first coming against 5-3 Florida State and the second to Saint Mary's.
After jumping out to an early lead against Florida State Saturday, the Cougars dropped three straight games to the Seminoles, losing their second match of the Doubletree/Sunset Showcase in Irvine California 3-1.
Houston took game one 30-23, but Florida State battled back to close out the match 30-24, 30-20, 30-21.
The Cougars had three players with double digit kills against FSU, Kelly McAnelly registered 13 kills while Cinthia Piva and Becca Sartori had 12 and 11 respectively. The Seminoles had four players in double digit kills in the match.
In the final match of the tournament for Houston, the Cougars lost in three games to Saint Mary's, who were the champions of the tournament. Sartori and Lauren Rhodes each totaled 13 kills to lead the team, while Jaci Gonzalez had a match high 16 digs.
Piva was named to the All-Tournament team for her play. In the three games played by the Cougars Piva had 34 kills.
Houston (2-7) will be in action again Tuesday when they take on cross-town rival Rice at 7 p.m. at Autry court on the Rice University campus.
