FLOWER MOUND, Texas - The University of Houston golf team opens the 2003-04 season Monday during first-day competition at the Mean Green Classic, in Flower Mound, Texas.
The two-day tournament begins with 36 holes of play Monday morning before wrapping up with the final 18 holes Tuesday morning.
The Cougars join Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisville, McNeese State, Middle Tennessee, Nebraska, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, Texas State-San Marcos, Stephen F. Austin State, Washington State, Western Kentucky and host North Texas on the 7,147-yard, par-72 course at Lantana Golf Club.
The Cougars begin a new era at this tournament under first-year head coach Vince Jarrett. An award-winning coach at Abilene Christian, Jarrett becomes only the fifth coach in the 58-year history of Cougar Golf, a program that has claimed 16 NCAA national championships. And Jarrett seems ready to resume the Cougars' winning ways this season.
"When I come to a tournament, I am coming to win a tournament. I'm not coming to just participate, and that's the way that I look at every tournament." Jarrett said. "We're not going to play golf; we're going to win wherever we go, and that's what I try to instill in my team."
UH's lineup at the Mean Green Classic will be composed of three returnees and a pair of newcomers. Sophomore Zach Mowbray leads the way for the Cougars into this week's tournament after finishing third a year ago with a 74.7 scoring average in eight tournaments.
Senior Denton Walker, the only senior on the 2003-04 Cougar squad, appeared in four tournaments last season and fired a 75.4 average, while junior Daniel Angenscheidt saw action in four tournaments, including the Conference USA Championships.
That group will be joined by junior transfer Jordan Hasbrouck from Sam Houston State and freshman Ricky Romano. In addition, freshman Pablo Acuna will see action as an individual player after sitting out all of last season with a redshirt.
"This team has a lot of talent, but it's a very young team," Jarrett said. "We want to work with them and get them started as the bricks that will help us on our foundation for the future.
"I am looking forward to a good year with them and I think they are looking forward to working hard."
