HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team continued preparations for this weekend's season opener with the annual Red-White intrasquad meet on Saturday at the new Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
In a light-hearted event with swimmers and divers from the UH squads divided into two squads, the Red Team rallied from a large deficit to win the last meet and take the meet title by a slim margin.
No doubt the Red Team benefited from numerous infractions by their White Team counterparts, like good-natured taunting and other penalties called by UH swimming head coach Mark Taylor and diving head coach Jane Figueiredo.
With the highly-contested meet decided by just a few points, both teams earned Saturday morning off from its regular schedule.
The meet featured off events like the 125-yard freestyle and 75-yard backstroke. Senior captains Lucile Turpin and Kristina DeWitt picked their respective teams and led them into competition against their Cougar teammates.
In the diving competition, newcomer Anna Kiess won the 3-meter event while sophomore Azul Almazan, who competed at the 2003 NCAA Championships, won first plate on the 1-meter board.
On the swimming side, newcomers Szintia Szanto and Haley Menard performed well in their first competitions as Cougars.
