Cougar volleyball falls to UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Houston volleyball team fell in four games to the UAB Blazers Friday night in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Cougars jumped out to an early one game lead by taking the first game 30-26, but were shut out the rest of the match as the Blazers won 30-26, 30-24, 30-26 to improve to 11-13 for the year and 4-3 in Conference USA play. The loss drops the Cougars to 6-14 for the season and 2-4 in C-USA.
Loure Dews led the Cougars with 20 kills and a .474 hitting percentage, scoring 24.5 points, while Cinthia Piva added a double double with 18 kills and 17 digs. Kelly McAnelly added 12 kills for Houston and Jaci Gonzalez picked up 26 digs.
The Blazer had three players record double doubles in the match, led by Martina Shields' 28 kills and 10 digs. Breanne Swenson had 19 kills and 22 digs, Lindsay Carnohan had 10 kills and 12 digs while Karen Boyd finished the night with 11 kills.
The Cougars will be in action again Saturday night when they take on the South Florida Bulls at 7:30 p.m.
